I’ve given you a restaurant guide to Sibiu with Food I Loved in Sibiu, but on this trip a realisation actually hit me – Sibiu´s brunch scene is blooming. And so, off I went to try them all (some again, some for the first time), and figure out which of these spots you should visit next time you’re in the city where houses have eyes. So without further ado, here’s where you should brunch in Sibiu next time you’re around.
1. Oua și Unt
Like everyone, I too have a lot of flaws. I am however, utterly loyal to my favourite brunch place in Sibiu, Oua si Unt. And while there are many reasons why (from food to ambiance and more), I think the main one is that when I enter this place, I feel like I’ve arrived home and that I’m bound to meet old friends again. Which to a certain degree I think I have gotten to do, even when I go alone. Octavian, one of the two faces behind the business (his wife, Alexandra being the second one), is always there to greet you with a smile and to tell you what else they’ve added to the menu, where their last brunch exploration city trip has been (Barcelona as to the time I’m writing these lines), and what their next plans are. You’ll instantly feel at home as you’re sipping your drink (I recommend the prosecco but am hearing rumours about an interesting new tea they’ve gotten their hands on) and waiting for what will surely prove to be one of the best brunches you’ve ever had.

What to order? Literally anything, you´ll love everything that comes out of Alexandra´s kitchen! I was first sold on their poached eggs on hash browns, then moved on to their egg in a brioche dish, and finally fell in love with their pancakes with home made lemon curd. The secret to all of the above, besides the chef’s skill and a dash of magic? Free range eggs and top ingredients.
Food: 10/10
Service: 10/10
Ambiance: 10/10
Location: 10/10 (it’s not as central as the below options, but Sibiu being a small city, it’s very easy to reach and the fact that it’s less central actually makes it more appealing to me)
Address: Strada Târgul Vinului 6, Sibiu 550191, Romania
Opening hours: Thu – Mon from 9 am to 3pm (closed on Tue + Wed)
2. Charlie’s Caffe
The newly opened location of Charlie’s Caffe, on the Avram Iancu street, is simply a magical little gem. A reconditioned old pharmacy, preserving some of its relics and with beautifully painted walls, a lot of warm wood tones and beautiful floors, Charlie’s is just the addition that Sibiu needed in terms of brunch. And if you’re wondering who Charlie is, he’s an adorable beagle whose owners decided to open a café (well two if you count their first location) in his name, paint him and his sister on the wall, and even make sure there’s a dog menu next to the human menu, so that all our dogs are welcomes at this cozy café. The place has a little terrace up front, but my personal recommendation is for you to get a window seat inside on a sunny day, and enjoy a book there, while waiting for your food. And while you’re at it, get yourself a latte. I might not like coffee, but even I have to admit that their latte is just out of this world.

What to order? Their shakshouka is as good as the one I make (and mine is excellent), so give it a try. Their brioche with fried egg, bacon and sriracha mayo is as fully as it gets and a fantastic savoury option too. If you have more of a sweet tooth though, try their French toast with baked pear, vanilla sauce and berries, it is as yummy as it is instagrammable.

3. Lumos Café and Brunch
Lumos – the original brunch spot in Sibiu. After all these years, it continues being trendy. Perhaps it’s its central location, from which you can overlook the beautiful tower of the evangelical church of Huet´s Square. Perhaps it’s the modern and minimalistic interior, which oozes luxury. Or its fantastic selection of wine, and variety of dishes – from eggs Benedict, to Turkish eggs or avo toasts – it has all the classics you need for brunch. Lumos is where I feel all the brunch lovers of Sibiu meet, be it on a working day or on the weekend. It always buzzes with people, and yet somehow there’s always a spot for you. Bear in mind that is spot is a more commercial place, which will feel less intimate than the above two options, but which will reliably provide you with your favourite dishes, year after year, proving itself a promising place for rituals with friends or your loved one.

What to order? Personally I love their Turkish eggs which rest upon the most perfect yogurt, topped by a delicious chilli oil and dashes of fresh dill. They make a fantastic avocado paste too, I just feel like their bread is cut a bit too thick, and being quite dense is harder to eat without making a mess of yourself. 🙂
